Today in Wheeling History: October 2--Cornerstone of Chapline Street Methodist Episcopal Church laid (1901).
The Chapline Street Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Wheeling in 1848. In 1901, the church on South Chapline Street was replaced by a new Romanesque and Byzantine-style building designed by Wheeling architects Giesey & Faris. The cornerstone laid in 1901 contained items like a history of the church, photos of Pastor J.S. Robinson and his family, contractor cards of Charles Wallace and Edward King, and coins. In 1966, after merging with Wesley Methodist, it was renamed Aldersgate United Methodist Church. For years it was home to the Unity Center recovery organization until 2017, when Unity Center moved to Benwood. The historic church building is now owned by Farm Direct LLC.
