Today in Wheeling History: October 3--The congregation of Saint Stephen's United Methodist Church of Christ was incorporated (1877).
St. Stephen's United Church of Christ was founded on December 5, 1875 at 37th and Jacob Streets with twenty charter members. It was incorporated in 1877 and had early temporary quarters in Nolte's Hall on Eoff Street. The first pastor was Rev. Louis Mueller starting in 1875, followed by Rev. Joseph L. Schatz, Rev. William Stechow, and Rev. William Braun. The original church building was dedicated in 1878. The current church building located at 3600 Eoff Street in South Wheeling was dedicated in 1902 during Rev. Ernest M. Preuss's pastorate. Other notable pastors include Rev. S.H. Matzke (two terms starting 1916 and 1933) and Rev. Le Roy H. Jeneskee, Jr. (1974-1991). Original 1875 charter members are listed in the 1991 brochure.
