The steamboat "Washington" was built in Wheeling in 1816 by Henry M. Shreve and partners, becoming the first steamboat with two decks designed for shallow western rivers. On its maiden voyage that year, the boiler exploded near Marietta, Ohio, killing or injuring 17 of the 21 passengers. The “Washington” arrived for the first time at the port of New Orleans on October 7, 1816. In 1817, it completed a famous 25-day record setting voyage from New Orleans to Louisville. The “Washington” operated until around 1824, when it was retired. Shreve’s innovative design served as the model for future western river steamboats.
