In October 1900, Thomas Workman was arrested for shooting and killing his abusive son-in-law, Millard F. Dryden, in Wheeling, West Virginia. At a preliminary hearing before Justice Rogers, Workman's daughter testified about Dryden's long history of threats and abuse against her and her family. Other witnesses corroborated Dryden's violent behavior. Workman testified that he shot Dryden when Dryden attacked his daughter, fearing for her life. The prosecuting attorney acknowledged the crime was justified and asked for Workman's acquittal. Justice Rogers dismissed the charges against Workman, finding his actions were justified self-defense.
