On Thursday, January 5, 1865, The Intelligencer reported there was an "opening" of the new John Reid & Co. brewery, located near the Baltimore and Ohio railroad depot in Wheeling, West Virginia. The brewery had the capacity to produce around 150 barrels of ale per week and was comprised of John Reid, a well-known Wheeling business person, John Amick, and John Kinghorn. Earlier, in 1863, John Reid, John Amick, and John Kinghorn had built an ale and malt house at 1425 South Street. After John Amick left the business and John Kinghorn died in 1866, John Reid took full control. By 1868, Reid had sold or leased the brewery, but locals still called it Reid's Brewery into the 1870s. George Kinghorn, John's son, partnered with Killian Kress to operate the Eagle Brewery from 1878 to 1884, distributing to four states. Today, the original brewing site is part of the parking lot for the Wheeling Civic Center.
