In December 1991, Parkersburg resident Alma Grace McDonough made a generous $6 million unrestricted donation to Wheeling Jesuit College. The funds were used to construct the McDonough Center, a 107,000-square-foot athletic and recreation complex dedicated in September 1994. The state-of-the-art facility houses Wheeling University's basketball, swimming, wrestling, and volleyball teams, as well as a fitness center, weight room, and athletic training amenities. Alma McDonough, wife of industrialist Bernard McDonough, was a long-time benefactor of Wheeling Jesuit College and Catholic educational institutions. Her family’s foundation also funded numerous academic projects at other regional colleges. Though she wished for no accolades, Wheeling Jesuit College fittingly honored this leading supporter by naming the athletic complex after her. The McDonough Center serves as an ongoing testament to the couple’s visionary philanthropy.
