The WWVA Jamboree radio show, broadcast out of Wheeling, West Virginia, was forced to discontinue live-audience broadcasts from December 12, 1942, through July 13, 1946, due to World War II. The show continued as a daytime show during the war years, providing entertainment to soldiers stationed around the country. Many performers were drafted, but new talent also emerged. After the war ended, the Jamboree resumed live-audience broadcasts on July 13, 1946. During the wartime hiatus, many war-themed songs were performed. In the post-war years, new performers like Reed Dunn and the highly popular Hawkshaw Hawkins rejuvenated the show. The Jamboree provided entertainment and morale for troops and listeners during difficult war years, until live production could resume in 1946.
