Jule Rivlin, born on February 2, 1917, in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Daniel and Celia Rivlin, was an accomplished basketball player and coach who was inducted into the Wheeling Hall of Fame in 1980. As a teenager, Rivlin moved to Wheeling and became a standout track and basketball star at Triadelphia High School. In 1935 at Triadelphia, he won the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes at the state track meet. He then attended Marshall College (now Marshall University), where Rivlin led the Thundering Herd basketball team to Buckeye Conference championships in 1938 and 1939 as a player. During his senior year in 1939, he scored 563 points and was second in the nation in scoring, being named a small-college All American. After graduating, Rivlin played for the Akron Goodyears AAU team in 1940 before serving in World War II. Following the war, he was a player-coach for the Wheeling Blues professional team from 1946 to 1951, winning 3 championships. Rivlin was also player-coach for the Toledo Jeeps and coached at McKinley Vocational High School. In 1955, he became head coach at Marshall, leading the team to a conference title and NCAA appearance in his first season. Rivlin coached at Marshall until 1963, finishing with a 100-88 record. He was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1972 and passed away in 2002.
