The Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) originated as City Hospital, founded in Wheeling, West Virginia on January 1, 1890, through local women's groups, particularly those from St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. City Hospital opened in 1892 in the former Wheeling Female Seminary. On January 14, 1914, the East Building opened on the seminary site and it became Ohio Valley General Hospital. The City Hospital Training School for Nurses, West Virginia's first nursing school, began in 1892. In 1973, it was renamed Ohio Valley Medical Center. OVMC grew over the decades, with a new 200-bed West Tower added in 1980. OVMC offered a range of healthcare services until its closure by owner Alecto Healthcare in September 2019. The City of Wheeling acquired the campus but was unable to find a new hospital operator. In 2023, the City agreed to transfer the property to WVU Medicine, who will demolish the aging hospital complex that totaled over 800,000 square feet. Demolition began in January 2024 and is expected to take over a year to complete. WVU Medicine plans to construct a $90 million regional cancer center on the site that will employ 150 people.
