The Morris Plan Bank & Trust Co. was incorporated in Wheeling on February 21, 1917. Originally located at 17 11th Street from 1917 to 1933, it later moved to 32 12th Street from 1934 to 1939, then to the corner of 14th & Market Streets in the Central Union Building from 1940 to 1970, and finally to 1145 Market Street from 1970 to 1978. In 1978, the Morris Plan Bank in Wheeling became Wheeling National Bank, which was eventually acquired by WesBanco in 2002. The Morris Plan banks were part of a historical banking system started in 1910 to provide loans to middle-class customers who often had difficulty obtaining credit from traditional banks. The Morris Plan banks expanded to over 100 locations nationally and pioneered automotive financing and credit life insurance.
