Wheeling Words Take Flight: Celebrating Playwright Leo Brady's Birth (January 23, 1917)

Today in Wheeling History: January 23--Leo Brady, renowned playwright and dramatist, is born in Wheeling (1917).
 
Leo Brady was born on January 23, 1917, in Wheeling, West Virginia. He attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he wrote some well-received plays as an undergraduate. He went on to write plays, novels, scripts for television and movies. Some of his works include the play Brother Orchid, the musical Yankee Doodle Boy with Walter Kerr, and novels Edge of Doom and Signs and Wonders. His works were adapted for film and television, including Edge of Doom starring Edward G. Robinson. Brady served in the U.S. Army during World War II producing radio programs. He taught drama at Catholic University. His students included several Pulitzer Prize winning playwrights. Brady died on November 18, 1984, in Chevy Chase, Maryland at age 67. He is buried at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland.
