On November 1, 1904, the “Wheeling Daily Intelligencer” announced the wholesale fruit, produce, and commission firm of Alex Durst & Sons would soon open their new modern five-story fireproof building at 9-11 Fourteenth Street in Wheeling. The structure, with a steel frame throughout, was designed by Otto Kalkrueth. Senior member Alex Durst started the business in Wheeling in 1868. In 1883 he located at 1038 Main Street, joined later by sons Frank A. and Charles E. Durst. The new building, with electric elevator, ripening rooms, and cold storage, cost $6,626 for the ground purchased on May 21, 1903. It was built to accommodate the constant increase in the wholesale business of Durst & Sons.
