The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was first established in Wheeling in 1859. The first YMCA building opened at the corner of Market and 20th Streets in 1889, in a building donated by Ruth Maxwell. This Victorian building was replaced in 1910 by a new 5-story YMCA facility on the same site, designed by architect Frederick F. Faris at a cost of $150,000. After the YMCA moved to Elm Grove in 1970, the 1910 building was renamed the Maxwell Center. The YMCA's current modern facility is at 55 Lounez Avenue in Elm Grove. Over its 150+ year history from 1859 to today, the Wheeling YMCA has served thousands of community members.
